Vera Rubin: weighing galaxies by their rotation

A photograph shows where a galaxy shines; it does not reveal all its mass. With Kent Ford and other collaborators, Vera Rubin measured how different regions rotate. Their speeds carried the investigation beyond what the light alone seemed to suggest.
